Which Requires Less Energy? AC Fan On or in Auto?

During the hot weather, using your air conditioning can be your highest monthly electrical charge. So, it’s only natural that you’re checking for methods to consume less energy. That might include trying an energy-efficient AC setting or even upgrading to an ENERGY STAR®-rated system with air conditioner installation.

Modifying your air conditioning’s fan setting is an additional way you can spend less money.

Your air conditioner relies on a fan to deliver the cool air it creates. You control this fan at your thermostat by setting it to “auto,” which means the fan will only work when the air conditioner is going. Or you can switch it to “on,” which indicates it will be on constantly.

Does putting your AC on “fan” save energy in Wisconsin Rapids? Not always. Generally, using your air conditioner’s fan all the time is going to drive up your energy bill slightly.

But it also has a few advantages (and drawbacks) in regard to your residence’s comfort. Here’s why.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “On”

Having your air conditioner’s fan go all the time can better balance your house’s comfort. This is great if you own a two-story house, since rooms upstairs can be more hot. It’s also good if you have difficulties with inconsistent cooling due to hot and cold areas.

It’s also beneficial if one of your loved ones has been diagnosed with allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues. That’s due to the fact the air is constantly being distributed and filtrated. On the flip side, you may have to install new air filters more frequently.

Having the fan on constantly can also increase your energy bills. It could also make the fan wear out prematurely and need air conditioning repair.

Your house may also appear muggier. Air conditioning helps manage humidity by extracting wetness from the air. But if the fan is constantly running, it’s challenging for moisture to drain from the condenser outdoors.

Air Conditioner Fan Set to “Auto”

This is the highest energy-efficient setting, because the fan will only run when your air conditioner does. It’s great if your residence always appears cool, no matter what room you’re in.

There are a few downsides to using the auto setting. You may experience hot and cold spots in your home and reduced air quality. This is due to the fact air isn’t always moving or being repeatedly filtrated.

On the flip side, you’ll need less energy and won’t be required to switch you air filter as often. Both are savings that can add up during the year, so you’ll have to think about what’s best for your home.
