Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, the majority of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not handled, your system may suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system may be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises at the end of their life. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A couple other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
